Sherman Middle School Choir students are enjoying a new piano this year thanks to the fundraising efforts of Mrs. Estorf, the students and families, and support from Mrs. Engdahl, Sherman Principal. Over the summer, the remaining funds of $1,800 came from over a dozen people giving to the project through the "Donors Choose" website. Sherman's wonderful PTA matched last years fundraiser making it possible to get the piano at the start of the year.
Mrs. Estorf, the director at Sherman said," I am excited for the students and enjoying many of the features on the Yamaha CV701 which allows me to pre-record our choral accompaniments freeing me up to play individual vocal parts, add instrumentation and percussion over the top. Additionally, students are learning how to read choral arrangements of some wonderful show tunes thanks to Lynn Najem, a retired MMSD music teacher. She has graciously donated her time by pre-recording several pieces that the students are currently working on like, Be Our Guest, Seize the Day from Newsies and Friend Like Me.
I want to especially thank one of the families that donated on the Donors Choose website, Kyra and Aidan Lauersdorf from Portland, Oregon. Their very generous donation which allowed for us to get the piano this year was given as a tribute to their Great Grandmother Helen who taught music at Sherman years ago. She was an accomplished pianist and even though they never met her, they did hear many stories from their father about their Great Grandmother Helen and the joy she brought through her music."
Here's to many more generations filled with the love of singing!
