Sherman Middle School Title I Program School-Parent Compact 2021-2022
The Sherman Middle School community is a diverse, fully inclusive learning environment. The school community shares a common vision to engage in culturally relevant activities, services, and programs that are funded by Title I, Part A of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA).
The compact outlines how the students, the parents, and the entire school staff will share responsibility for improved student academic achievement as well as the means by which the school, parents, and students will build and develop a partnership that will help children achieve lifelong success.
Sherman Middle School will:
- respect the dignity of every member of the Sherman community and value positive relationships as central to building and maintaining a safe learning environment.
- hold high expectations, academically and behaviorally, for all students which are clearly communicated, consistently modeled, and positively reinforced.
- support every student in achieving their potential and preparing for future opportunities and active citizenship.
- offer a standards-based curriculum that is student-centered, culturally responsive, integrated, and relevant.
- model teamwork, collaboration, collegiality, democratic governance, and a commitment to lifelong learning.
- partner with families and community stakeholders to nurture the intellectual, social, and emotional development of our students.
- provide high-quality inclusive instruction and assessment of the following school-wide strategies:
- Build students' ability to comprehend and analyze complex texts across content areas.
- Integrate complex texts into literacy strategies that are culturally relevant and representative of the student population.
- Focus on Common Core Mathematical Practice Standard #1 (MP1)-Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
- Employ a variety of school-wide restorative practices through Multi-Tiered System of Supports.
- Collaboratively plan and implement learning opportunities that require students to use expressive language to communicate academic knowledge.
- Increase retention of students in music throughout the middle school years and content of music course includes culturally relevant materials and delivery.
- Collectively support students' social-emotional learning through the development of our advisory model.
- Provide families with support of students' academic and social-emotional goals while getting feedback around student strengths and motivators.
- provide parents with frequent reports on their child’s progress. Staff will make regular contact with parents by holding Parent/Teacher conferences, email and phone calls to have two-way communication, and through Infinite Campus (an online electronic system that includes progress information)
- provide parents reasonable access to staff through staff email and phone calls
- provide parents opportunities to volunteer and participate in their child’s school, and to observe classroom activities. Families will contact school office or staff member to arrange visit and volunteer opportunity.
Parent Responsibilities
We, as parents, will support our child’s learning in the following ways:
- Monitor attendance.
- Make sure that homework is completed.
- Participate, as appropriate, in decisions relating to my child’s education. Monitor my child’s progress.
- Attend at least one teacher conference during the school year.
- Stay informed about my child’s education and communicate with the school by promptly reading all notices from the school or the school district either received by my child or by mail and responding, as appropriate.
- Consider serving, to the extent possible, on policy advisory groups, such as being a parent representative on the Sherman PTO or or other school advisory or policy groups.
- Check Infinite Campus for grades and missing work of my child.
- Request additional meetings with staff as needed.
Student Responsibilities
We, as students, will share the responsibility to improve our academic achievement and achieve high standards. We will:
- Be respectful and cooperative with the teacher and other students.
- Be in school. Report to class on time. Be an active participant in class.
- Assist parents in the use of Infinite Campus and the Sherman website
- Be prepared for class. Give my parents or the adult who is responsible for my welfare all notices and information received by me from my school.
- Encourage parents to communicate with teachers.
